New Artist: Gizelle Smith and The Mighty Mocambos
Ever since their first collaboration on the “Mocambo Funk Forty Fives” compilation, things have gained momentum for the “Golden Girl of Funk” and the much respected Hamburg-based label and live band. Their first single “Working Woman” became an overnight smash and a prime-time club favourite of funk & soul DJs from all over the world. Initially released on the Finnish private press label Old Capital, producer legend and Grammy nominee Kenny Dope (Masters at Work, Bucketheads) picked up and remixed the song for his own label Kay Dee Records. Gizelle Smith & Mocambo now step up with a full-length album of bonafide sister funk.
In the days of digital recording and Pro Tools editing, they show true exception to modern techniques and create their highly regarded, unique and raw soul sound, by making use of simple dynamic microphones and reel-to-reel tape machines.
In a genre which is often littered with overused clichés of the past, the charismatic Gizelle Smith adds a lot of her own flavour rather than slavishly copying icons of bygone decades. The result is a refreshing alternative to post-millenium plastic pop without being a mere retro rip-off.
From the heavy and determined “Gonna Get You” to vulnerable, gospel-tinged laments such as “Coffee High”, the album is just as deeply rooted in the music from the golden era of soul as it is a modern masterpiece in its own right.
Blazing horns, soulful guitars, driving drums and basslines combined with Gizelle’s gripping and powerful voice all weave together to create a long player that is varied and coherent at the same time.

New Album: Silhouette Brown - 2 (Release 2010)

Silhouette Brown delivers its long-awaited second release two featuring the unmistakable vocal sounds of Philadelphia's Lady Alma. Alma's distinctive soulful voice brings a vivacious energy the various sounds introduced in the album. Her past projects include countless club classics from Sylk130's “When the Funk Hits The Fan” to Soul Dahmma’s “Happy” and 4hero's “Hold it Down.” In two, Silhouette Brown is experimenting with different genres to create wonderful and meaningful musical.
"Get With It" is a hip-hop song featuring Brand Nubian’s Sadat X, which talks about uniting and progressing. “Leave A Note” is who talks about suicide, while "Hear Them Often Say" is about having faith. New Album: Trizonna McClendon
Confident vocals, extremely catchy choruses and very well written lyrics laid over groovy yet poignant live instrumentation is the catalyst of Trizonna McClendon’s sophomore release, NewFamiliar. An R&B album at heart, NewFamiliar takes the listener through an eclectic mix of Soul, Funk, Jazz, Dance and Country, allowing each genre’s sound to fit comfortably in the sequence of the record. Without losing her Adult Contemporary sensibilities, Trizonna manages to create an album that is as easy going, fun and playfully as it is thought provoking, seductive and sexy. Unlike its predecessor Overtones & Innuendos, NewFamliar finds Ms. McClendon taking risks and exploring the various musical sounds that personally interest her.The production on NewFamiliar is 100% sample free. The producers chosen for this album are all talented musicians in their own right. Trizonna’s growth is evident upon first listen and it is safe to say NewFamiliar clearly will not fall a victim to the music industry branded “sophomore jinx”. This is truly an album for all ages because it bridges the listening gap with a plethora of sounds. NewFamiliar is Trizonna McClendon’s release. It is an album where she truly opens up and shares with the listener, the various sides of her Gemini personality. Whether she’s putting a man in check or her self in check, trying to reach out to a friend or trying to reach out to a lover, her message is clear and unoffensive. NewFamiliar is like nothing you’ve heard before but everything you’ve heard and more. It is a moment of clarity, where the artist and the listener become one and relate on all levels.
This is an album that is just as much for men as it is for women. An artistic expression of social commentary, love, sex, self evaluation, triumph and acceptance; strategically placed over beautifully orchestrated rhythms and melodies. NewFamiliar is that harmonious trip to a place you feel you’ve been before. More than anything, it is the wonderfully constructed sophomore effort by Chicago’s own Trizonna McClendon. © CDbaby.com

New Album: N'Dambi - Pink Elephant
N'Dambi was born Chonita Gilbert in Dallas, Texas. This album is, actually, her 4th album, and represents a forward career move for the woman, relocating to the rejuvenated Stax Records imprint. N'Dambi used to sing backgrounds for Erykah Badu, and, along with the help of the legendary producer Leon Sylvers III, she recorded this fine album in Santa Monica, California. To her credit, N'Dambi has a hugely distinctive vocal styling, making her instantly recognizable to most Soul Music fans. This set is, probably, her most satisfying release to date. Previous outings did contain killer tracks, however, these recordings show a new maturity and consistency throughout the proceedings, which make for a hugely enjoyable journey, stopping off at various welcome points along the way, one of which is the wonderfully titled 'Nobody Jones', which is as good a song as I have ever heard from this woman. 'LIE' is another cracker, containing a very socially aware lyric. Other moments of high standard arrive in the contrasting shapes of 'Mind Blowin', the Southern sounding 'Daisy Chain', 'Can't Hardly Wait' and the moody and melodic 'What It Takes'. N'Dambi's music is a thoughtful and really does set a mood throughout. 'N'Dambi....Mistress Of The Mood Music'! Very bold! Very fine release.| Reactions: |
Listen out for: Alex Nester
Alex Nester is UNIQUE...this very song from her new album describes this talented twenty-four-year-old songstress who is gifted beyond her years. Of course other phrases come to mind: phenomenal, amazing, born to sing. When Alex picks up the mike, she sings with the conviction, passion, and experience of someone twice her age. But maybe that makes sense, she has been singing professionally since she was nine! Her resume already includes 12 albums, countless jingles, and over 25 theatrical productions, as well as working with established musicians such as The Four Tops, The Fifth Dimension, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Desi Arnaz, Jr. But then again, maybe Alex's deep musical expression comes not only from her professional experience but from her life experience. Lets go back to year 2000. She had recently turned 16. She had recently won the Outstanding Female Vocalist award at the prestigious LA Music Awards alongside some of the biggest names in the music business. Her career was beginning to soar. Then reality hit like a brick wall...Alex was diagnosed with cancer and her world was turned upside-down. Now instead of studio sessions she was attending chemotherapy sessions. Instead of doing gigs, she was fighting for her life. But the light of this fantastic young talent was not ready to be dimmed.Through prayer, hope, excellent treatment, and a year-long battle she was declared cancer-free. And now, in 2009, with years of professional experience, with profound life experience, Alex is doing was she was born to do: SING! But she doesnt just sing...she writes, she creates, she communicates. Blending gospel, jazz, R & B, funk, and blues, her music is soul music that comes from deep within and out through her extraordinary instrument. She sells a song with a depth of expression that could only come from a blend of unbelievable, unique raw talent; honed through unusual unique musical experience; sifted through powerful, unique personal trials. And now it all comes together for this amazing, young musical giant. As we finally see the release of her 1st album, get ready...Alex Nester is definitely...UNIQUE!

Listen out for: Esperanza Freeze
Placed on an offering table for her first “big solo” at the tender age of two, it is no surprise that Esperanza Freeze may have been ‘born to sing.’ Growing up in church, Esperanza’s love for music was developed and nurtured at an early age. In fact, her gifts dominated her life from as early as she can recall and her exceptional talent has not gone unnoticed. She has sung for, recorded with, opened for Yolanda Adams, Kindred the Family Soul, Case, Canton Jones, Shirley Caesar, Dottie Peoples, Melinda Doolittle, The Canton Spirituals, Karen Clark-Sheard, and Vickie Winans. She appears on Gold and Platinum selling albums from 95 South, The 69 Boys, and The Quad City DJ’s. She considers herself fortunate to have had the opportunities that she’s been given to work with accomplished producer, Veit Renn, Joe Smith, Bob Katz, Stephen “Toby” Lewis, and many other great talents on this project. As a gifted singer/songwriter/producer, she has been compared to Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys and Jill Scott to name a few. Esperanza is definitely ‘one to watch.’
But it is her own unique brand of “Inspirational Soul”, mixed with passionate vocals and candid lyrics that make Esperanza’s sound all her own. “Nick of Time” is a collection that includes moving declarations like “Survive” and “Incomplete” along with heavy-hitting testimonials like “Tell It” and the title track “Nick Of Time.” Her artistry is honest and inspiring and with the personal testimony to support every lyric, Esperanza is a real artist with a real message set to real music in a world where that can often be hard to find.

Update: Sade

R&B singer Sade is to release her first album in nine years, according to reports. Sade's US website has been refreshed and a new site, Sade2009.com, has been launched with purported information about the forthcoming record.
The reports have been confirmed by Aruba-based radio station RAAR FM, although Sade's label has yet to comment – or to reassure sceptics that Sade2009.com is an official site. Last heard on 2000's Lovers Rock, Sade is notoriously patient with her music – prompting even Prince to recently say he was "[getting] sick of waiting for Sade to make a new album".
According to the new – and still unauthenticated – artist site, "[Sade] does not make albums for the money, Sade is an artist who creates music purely on inspiration. Hence why we've waited nearly a decade for another release, like a poet with a nine-year year dry spell until she fell in love again, Sade will bless us with another classic. In occasionally incorrect English, the site promises a new album on 25 November, even if its songs will "[reveal] little about [Sade's] closely shielded private life".
Apart from these reports, the most recent word on Sade's recordings is from R&B singer Maxwell, who wrote in March. "Sade is on her way [with a new album] and trust me, it's so monolithic it'll shake you in your shoes!" he posted on his Facebook fan page. Whenever Sade's new album arrives, we hope it's sexier than the word "monolithic" would suggest.
