Heston - Warm Human Cold World

Heston’s last album Storyteller announced the arrival of a mature soul artist warranting comparisons with genre favorite Maxwell. On his sophomore release, Warm Human Cold World, Heston manages to shake off the usual lazy comparisons offered by reviewers such as yours truly, effortlessly providing a more personal and complete album delivered in a more languid style with enviable depth, distinguishing him from the rest of the soul flock. If there are any comparisons to be made, they would have to be with legendary artists such as Marvin, Smokey and Leon Ware for its honesty, musicality and the ability to produce songs where the subject and music align together as perfect bedfellows. The album ploughs a resolutely mellow vibe with ample space in the arrangements and performances to successfully resonate deeper with the listener. Warm Human Cold World is a traditional album of strong songs, and while it’s certainly no exercise in retro, one could imagine this album having been released any time in the past forty years. Without pandering to trends, Heston has made a timeless album that grows in stature with every listen. With a couple of notable exceptions, the album plays in a downtempo mood overall, indeed the first five songs all meld into one another, creating a suite reminiscent of the A-side of an old LP. With a consistent band across the album, the unified sound is a highlight. Indeed, while the album is devoid of long solos and showy instrumentation, the arrangements allow enough light to shine on the stellar musicianship. While the playing across the board is captivating, the bass playing is a real highlight, adding a jazzier edge throughout.

It’s tough to circle particular tracks as standouts and while other reviews have highlighted the closing track and new single, the uptempo Greatest Lover, as its best, I’m drawn to the slower tracks, more in line with the overall mood of the album. Personal favorites include the languid seven minute deep bath soul of You, the delicate balladry of In These Arms and the country-flavored lament Lonely in my Room, a track that would not sound out of place musically on the Pat Metheny / Charlie Haden album Beyond the Missouri Sky. But dip in anywhere across Warm Human Cold World’s ten tracks and you’re guaranteed to find a sincere, soulful gem, warm with emotion set to resonate in your chest. Heston has been brave to deliver a resolutely downtempo album. As we know, it’s often the ‘dancers’ or uptempo tracks that draw the crowds. But Warm Human Cold World has a depth far beyond most current soul R&B releases. There is nothing mechanical about the songs, performance and production and while its magic may take multiple spins to intoxicate the listener, handsome dividends will be paid. The album cements Heston as part of soul’s premier league. If the lazy comparisons with Maxwell are to be continued, I hope that it will be solely in relation to Heston’s popularity, as his music stands proudly alone. ©Soulcuts.org

Soul/R&B singer Ledisi is in the lab working on her sixth studio album, a follow-up to her critically acclaim set, ‘Turn Me Loose’ (Verve). The Grammy-nominated songstress, who is currently performing with Angie Stone and Jaguar Wright, says the new effort will be about penmanship.

“The new album is based around songwriting. It's very R&B, but not completely,” she says. “I always have to push it again. You won't hear the heavy guitars anymore - you will hear a really nice sound from me.” Like ‘Turn Me Loose,’ expect Ledisi to diversify into different sounds and genres of music. “This album is so much easier because I had the experience with ‘Turn Me Loose’," she says. “Now, I'm so into songwriting - it made it seem so easy. Now, I've learned to take a song and exhaust every possibility. It's good to go everywhere around the world (with songwriting) to come back. Sometimes (the final one) is good, but the first one is better. It's exhausting, but worth it. I feel like I've done everything with that song.” Look out for Ledisi’s new album later this year.

Marsha Ambrosius - Late Nights & Early Mornings

Already proven as a talented, sought after songwriter and revered platinum-selling artist, Marsha Ambrosius is meeting the next challenge in her already impressive musical career by reinventing herself as a solo artist with her J Records debut disc LATE NIGHTS & EARLY MORNINGS. Hailing from Liverpool, England, fans first got a taste of Marsha’s talent as the singing half of the duo Floetry. Their 2000 debut Floetic produced signature singles like “Say Yes" and "Getting Late" as well as four Grammy nods. Following the 2005 release of their second studio album, Flo’Ology, the ladies veered creatively and personally. She also appeared as a featured artist on projects from Patti Labelle, The Game, Busta Rhymes, Jamie Foxx and Earth, Wind & Fire, among others. Eventually, Marsha signed with Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Records however a much-buzzed about solo debut never materialized due to creative glitches. Equipped with plenty of her own talent, she found herself being given songs from producers that were “great but not songs that made sense in relation to each other.” Marsha calls her sound “honest and consistent” and it was important for her to make an album with an overall cohesive sound.

The long-awaited debut album from Selah Sue. The album with the same title was produced by Patrice Selah Sue & Farhot. Besides her first two singles Raggamuffin and Crazy Vibes, the album contains the Mommy track produced by renowned Meshell Ndegeocell and track Please where Cee Lo Green (F ** k You) participated.

Selah Sue , Sanne Putseys, was born in Leuven, Belgium and is 21 years old. Last year she signed to French label Because Music, which includes artists such as Charlotte Gainsbourg, John Butler Trio, Uffie. Her voice is a cross between Amy Winehouse, Erykah Badu and Duffy but unmistakably Selah Sue. "I write as a singer-songwriter, but prefer to sing in the style of black music. Soul, blues, ska, ragga and drum 'n' bass, "she says.

Selah Sue was already noted by early 2009 in "The World Keeps Turning" (a Dutch TV Show) that year where she has performed twice. She was also previously a guest in the show of Giel Beelen at 3FM and in the same year she played at North Sea Jazz and Lowlands. Also last year she played at Lowlands and gave several sold-out concerts in our country(Netherlands). Raggamuffin her EP, released in October 2010, stood at # 1 on the iTunes R & B / Soul album chart and # 2 on the iTunes album chart.

Karen Souza - Karen Souza Essentials

While Karen Souza´s voice may sound like it was made for jazz, she is in fact a relative newcomer to this genre of music. Her career began under various psydeonymns as she provided vocal support to a number of electronic music producers and was part of several International House hits. She can be found singing under these pseudonymns on albums such as Pacha Ibiza, FTV (FashionTV), Paris Dernier and Hotel Costes, Privé. She had just begun to flirt with the idea of singing to jazz when she was contacted and invited to join the production of the first volume of the series, Jazz and ´80s. No one imagined the success that the series would have almost over night. The producer of the series knew a good thing when he saw it and he quickly shared his enthusiasm in the project with Karen and made her and her voice an important part of each album.

Now that Karen had gotten her toes wet in the studio, her label decided it was time to dive in and they sent her and the rest of the Quartet on tour to Brazil in late 2009. The visit was a great success and Karen came into her own onstage, gaining confidence and ever tuning and refining her singing. On the heels of the Brazilian adventure, the label again stepped in and told Karen it was time to focus on her own material. To this effect they sent her to Los Angeles for a few months to work with and learn from some of the best songwriters in the business. It was there that she studied under the guidance of Pam Oland , a multiple Grammy nominated songwriter who has worked with stars like Whitney Houston, Earth, Wind and Fire and Aretha Franklin, to name a few. This period gave new direction to Karens own composing and songwriting and has helped her develop her signature sound while continuing to please fans with her characteristic lush vocals. After her stint in LA, Karen began to dedicate herself exclusively to rehearsing both new and older material with the rest of the quartet and they have achieved a symbiosis that is a pleasure to watch. The Cooltrane Quartet with Karen in the lead is an act not to be missed, full of excellent jazz versions and brand new soloist material from a truly dynamic young artist.

The Bamboos - Side-Stepper

On their third album The Bamboos spice up their beat-laden deep party funk sound with an injection of Northern soul and ‘60s Mod soul style. An amazing selection of guest vocalists – Kylie Auldist, MC Ty, Megan Washington and Swedish soul sensation Paul MacInnes – add their own unique flavours to the brew. The first single, “King of the Rodeo” featuring Megan Washington, out in September, was featured as the ‘X-Posure Hot One’ on John Kennedy’s XFM X-Posure show, as well as gaining major support from Gary Crowley (BBC London and 6Music), Mark Lamarr (BBC Radio 2) and Edward Adoo (NME Radio). This inspired cover of the Kings Of Leon song has pricked up the ears of the indie kids and clubbers alike, and launches the off-kilter indie-rock favourite into a land of Mod-fuelled swinging ‘60s boogaloo.

The album kicks off with “Nightsport”, a raucous instrumental soundtrack to the crazy times had by music lovers and music makers who come out only in the small hours, building into a furious funk groove followed by guitar breakdowns and soulful trumpet and piano solos. From here this diverse record segues between the perfect JB’s-style floor fillers for which The Bamboos have become known and the rich jazz-informed harmonies of Kylie Auldist voiced numbers like “Make It Real”; peppered with quirky individual nuggets of soul like “King Of The Rodeo” and the blissful “Move On” featuring Paul MacInnes which slows things down a notch. “Can’t Help Myself” – a collaboration with Ty, one of UK hip hop’s biggest talents – weaves an irresistible hook over a super-heavy deep Bamboos groove. During Ty’s last Australian tour he jumped up onstage with The Bamboos for an impromptu freestyle which planted the seeds for this track. The CD’s grand finale comes in the form of an incendiary version of The Winstons’ absolute classic drum ‘n’ bass/breakbeat inspiring track “Amen Brother”, which has been a staple of the Bamboos’ live set from the very early days. The extended drum explosion in the middle section was a huge hit with the breakers when The Bamboos provided the music for The World B-Girl Championships earlier this year.

Widely regarded as one of the best funk bands in the world, The Bamboos have earned themselves acclaim from the likes of Mr Scruff, Keb Darge, DJ Food, Kenny Dope and Snowboy, among a long list of renowned music minds and tastemakers. Ntjam Rosie - Elle

October 6th and 11th Ntjam Rosie presented her new album Elle in “De Doelen”, Rotterdam and in “Paradiso”, Amsterdam respectively. Both nights she welcomed two very special guests: drummer Nathan Allen (Amy Winehouse) and bassist Alex Bonfanti (Tom Jones). Both musicians flew over from the UK to join Rosie’s band on these special occasions. 24 year-old drummer Nathan Allen from London has worked with artists like Faith Evans and Amy Winehouse. Bass player Alex Bonfanti, also 24 years old and also from London has played with Joss Stone and Tom Jones. Nathan and Alex have contributed to Rosie’s album Elle and they have joined her release shows.

Since the release of Rosie’s first album Atouba (2008) beautiful things have happened to her. She graduated from Codarts Conservatory and won the MCN World Up Award. Rosie had the honour to receive the Music Matters Award, which enabled her to record Elle and won her the title Music Ambassador for Rotterdam. Ntjam Rosie has closed a show for Erykah Badu, has opened for Jose James and has performed on festivals like Dunya, The Hague Jazz, North Sea Round Town and Mundial. October 8th Rosie’s album Elle has hit the shops. American radio station KCRW has premiered the first single “In Need” and put it on its playlist. KCRW has always been upfront in discovering and acknowledging new talent around the world. The station has played an important role in the breakthrough of several international artists.

Did she get over him? Did he ever tell his wife?

We rarely hear songs which depict “the other woman’s” side of the story . There are tons of songs out there that are from the perspective of the man or woman who has been cheated on and the other man or woman always gets a bad rap because most of the time we don’t know the full story and we assume they are the home wrecker but that’s not always the case so this song is dedicated to all “the other men or women” out there who have found themselves in some kinda love triangle.

Aloe Blacc - Good Things

Ludgarde “Lulu” Fall is a singer, songwriter and thespian currently based in Washington, DC. Lulu, a classically trained jazz vocalist with a musical theatre background, is one complete and unexpected package. As a product of Senegalese and Cameroonian parentage, her music reflects her global perspective by way of her American sensibilities. Her sound experiments with various musical genres in order to carve out a unique musical identity that is poignant in any setting. Her ultimate goal is quite simply to create a framework that not only represents her double consciousness as an African and American and but also reflects her love for jazz, electronica, folk, rock and soul.

With a degree in Jazz Studies, Lulu attended Michigan State University. Through this prestigious university, Lulu has had the opportunity to participate in Generations 2006—a biannual jazz workshop held in Frauenfeld, Switzerland. There, she studied with pianist and composer Cedar Walton, drummer Lewis Nash, alto saxophonist Brad Leali, and many others. Lulu has also performed with Jon Hendricks, Kevin Mahogany, Derrick Gardner, and Adrian Mears, to name a few. Among the many places Ms. Fall has performed, some highlights include the Winter Music Conference in Miami, FL, in which she performed one of her original songs, “Obsession: I’m on Fire,” Blues Alley in Washington, DC, and Langnau Jazz Nights Festival, in Switzerland. Though Lulu has a strong background in Jazz, she has been expanding her horizons and began composing and writing originals in the Soul and Alternative genre. Verve Forecast releases the new album by acclaimed singer Lizz Wright, Fellowship on September 28. The 12-track gospel-tinged record features a number of traditional songs long held sacred by Wright alongside originals by guest performers Angelique Kidjo, Me’Shell N’Degeocello, Joan as Policewoman and social activist and Sweet Honey in the Rock founder Dr. Bernice Reagon, among others. Fellowship is the follow-up to Wright’s 2008 record The Orchard, which “CBS News Sunday Morning” declared “one of the best albums of the year” while the Los Angeles Times called it “a creative breakthrough for Wright, whose smoldering, sensual voice now has a vision to go with it.” Fellowship continues Wright’s celebrated collaboration with acclaimed singer-songwriter Toshi Reagon, who co-produced the new album and wrote/performed on a number of tracks on Wright’s previous release. Wright was born in the small town of Hahira, Georgia to a local minister. She grew up traveling through the South singing with her parents and siblings. She first came to national attention in 2002 when she performed in a series of Billie Holiday tribute shows. Since then she’s released Salt (2003), Dreaming Wide Awake (2005) and The Orchard (2008), all three critical and fan favorites.

The theme of the 11 piece Jazz album is derived from " The Hunting of the Snark", a classic book of poems written by Lewis Caroll, author of"Alice in Wonderland". The musicians wrote a song for every chapter of the poem, covering the essence of the whole opus. The core group is Bajka (vocals), Daniel (piano,rhodes) and Jerker (double bass).The lyrical and musical theme is a metapher for the sub conscious search of subjective happiness in life. This, supported by the superb drummer Philipp Bernhardt and played in a jazzy way, adding funk, hip hop, latin, soul and a superb string quartet and horn section (flutes and saxes), additionally contributes to the ageless,dreamlike quality of this unique release. The enchanting cover and booklet artwork was created by Chiara and Bajka. If America were ever in need an Afrofuturistic Alicia Keys to take its politics and boredom on a drugged-out soul music trip, DC native Carolyn Malachi’s newest EP, Lions, Fires & Squares, is selling tickets for the ride. It’s clear that the Smart Chicks Inc. founder wants to win a Grammy. Bad. You can hear it in the raw growls before the first track drops, ripe with the conviction of a woman on a musical mission. Song and spoken word are masterfully layered on the subtly haughty intro track “Orion,” Malachi coos “Hey, Space Cowboy,” inviting The Hunter on a voyage through the Milky Way, where the lyrical quality is reminiscent of Jamiroquai and Meshell Ndegeocello. Conversely, “Textual,” swings with a jazzy, Esthero-like groove (think “Wikked Lil’ Grrrls”) on this party track. South African hip-hop artist and activist, HHP’s (Hip-Hop Pantsula) Motswako mixture conjures up a nasal, K’Naan-esque flow on this contagiously funky, soulful joint. Drums quicken and horns amplify here to usher in a more indigenous sound for HHP’s cameo.

But, when the lone guitar strums the tune “Dumela,” you will be called back from outer space to the roots of R&B music. Inspired by the Malachi’s recent visit to South Africa (sponsored by the community artist incubator, Bloombars) “Dumela” soothes with two simple Setswana phrases that will follow you around like lyrical ghosts throughout your day–”Sao bona,” or “I See You,” and “Dumela,” meaning “Believe.” This truly should have been the anthem to the 2010 World Cup. You might even make it your wedding song. I’ve seen this song still an entire room. The only unfortunate choice on the EP was to allow the video game bleeping, sound effects-ridden “Textual” club remix to follow abruptly after the gentle ballad, “Dumela.” But, overall the album traverses this newly carved lane of Black contemporary music gracefully, sent from the future by the likes of Erykah Badu for emerging artists like Malachi who dare to dance with the Kosmos.

Contrastingly, following on is the uptempo jazz infused club number Cargo where plaintive piano chords ride across Brazilian beats and brass to create a hypnotic, mesmerizing soundscape. The album opens with the wonderful ‘All In My Head’ with Ms Sunshine pointing out that we can all be our own worst enemy at times. The track deals with insecurity, doubt and confusion but rather than sounding depressing or melancholy, she puts a bright, almost upbeat spin on the subject matter. ‘Today’ is a track that everyone will be able to relate too, opening with the line “Today, nothin seems to be going my way. Trying to keep my sanity is getting the best of me”. As she reels off a list of problems including a baby-father acting up, car troubles and a nightmare boss, you begin to get the impression that this album is on a bit of a ‘downer’, yet her smooth, jazzy vocals, and accomplished rhodes-playing make it a compelling listen.

For All We Know is José James' first album for Impulse! Records, as well as his first U.S. release. But the Minneapolis-born, London-based singer is already a sensation in Britain, Europe and Japan. Since his arrival on the international scene in 2008, audiences and critics alike have embraced the artist's talent and versatility, with his first two albums (released on influential DJ/producer Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings label) winning James a reputation as both a rising star and a vital new creative force. All but one of For All We Know's ten songs were recorded in a single informal six-hour session at Galaxy Studios in Mol, Belgium. The project came together spontaneously, after James and Neve performed together on a Belgian television show and Neve filled in for James' regular pianist at a concert in Brussels. "It felt like we'd been playing together forever," José recalls. "I had the next day off, so I said 'Let's go in the studio and try to capture some of this vibe.' Jef booked this really nice studio, we let the tape roll, and that's the album. There was no producer, no overdubs, and most of the songs were first takes. "It wasn't anything that we thought was gonna turn into a big release," he continues. "It was just something that we thought was really cool. We just played the songs we love the way we felt them, with no constraints. Playing as a duo is very pure and honest; it's just you, the piano and silence."

As impressive as For All We Know is, it presents just one aspect of José James' musical portfolio, whose expansiveness and diversity belies the artist's tender age. The son of a jazz-saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist father from Panama, José first embraced jazz in his early teens. By the age of 17, he had emerged as both a budding performer and a serious student of jazz history and technique, performing around Minneapolis in a variety of lineups with an assortment of seasoned local jazz players. "I realized early on that I could connect with people through music," José recalls. "I wasn't thinking much about making it into a career; I was just caught up in the excitement of making music. I also realized that the vocal developments in jazz progressed with the instrumental developments, and that the instrumentalists' rhythmic and harmonic sophistication was absorbed and transmuted by the singers of the day. That really opened my eyes, and helped to give me a direction and a focus." This can be extremely brief given that Smith's story, travails and so on have been much canvassed. But what hasn't been said too often or too loudly is that while her previous album Long Player sold exceptionally well it came encumbered with two shortcomings which probably didn't go unnoticed by those at Manhattan/Blue Note with whom she parted company.

It lacked coherent songs (aside from Don McGlashan's Bathe in the River obviously), and she was prone to start at the top of her over-emoting range and try to move up from there. Soulful ululation has its place but usually it is in the service of the song, not as a substitute for one -- and that's what that album sounded like to these ears. That's not a popular opinion to hold given the album was much loved by some (and bought by 30,000 New Zealanders), but let it be said that this new one suffers from no such problems.

It is a powerful, cathartic and soulful album and songs like Humour bristle with slinky energy and power. There is also real emotional drama here (the Aretha-like piano ballad Finding Home, the guitar-slashed blues of Let Me Go) and it is now her delicious and deliberate understatement which allows that terrific voice to have necessary counterpoint when she takes off on sky-scaling flights. Wonderful album on every front. She should be clearing a space on the mantelpiece.

The new wave bounce of the first single "Why Dontcha Call Me No More" evokes Pat Benatar, while the throwback synth funk of "Change Your Mind" suggests Solar Records in its heyday. Highlighting YahZarah's classical jazz training is "Shadow," a stunning Zo!-produced piece that features her backed solely by piano and a haunting orchestral arrangement.

An experiemental and self taught singer and songwriter originally hailing from South East London, Andreya Triana grew up submerged in a multicultural atmosphere. A unique vocalist, Andreya begun singing at the tender age of 7 taking influence from the sights and sounds of inner city London. Her early love and passion for music would see her locked in her bedroom for hours on end writing poetry, making homemade mix tapes and recording tracks - utilising two battered cassette decks to record harmonies.
Her early love of improvisation would warp and change over the years, hugely influencing her 'Freeflo Sessions' - a hypnotic one woman show using a sampler to loop vocals, percussive sounds and beats live. 2006 saw her selected from thousands to take part in the Red Bull Music Academy in Australia where she further developed her style for improvisation and secured links with some of the best producers and musicians on the music scene.

Multiple collaborations ensued daily at the Academy, 'Tea Leaf Dancers' a collaboration with glitchy hip hop producer Flying Lotus (released on Warp Records) was a product of this and has been her most successful musical venture to date. Hailed as a classic while getting rave reviews from Benji B and Gilles Petersonon while getting airplay on Annie Mac's Radio One show. It was this track that also caught the attention of Ninja Tune stalwart Bonobo.
2009 has been an eventful year for Miss Triana, touring America and Canada with the Bonobo live band, playing on the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury showcasing new material and signing a three album deal with Ninja Tune Records.

A follow up to 2007's Grammy nominated album "The Real Thing," Scott's forthcoming effort is said to be taking a personal turn, described as "a flurry of emotional poetry as both her career and personal life have skyrocketed with success in Hollywood and the birth of her first child."

Titled "The Light of the Sun," the album is expected to be a Spring/Summer 2010 release, just in time for Scott's return to the stage.

N'Dambi was born Chonita Gilbert in Dallas, Texas. This album is, actually, her 4th album, and represents a forward career move for the woman, relocating to the rejuvenated Stax Records imprint. N'Dambi used to sing backgrounds for Erykah Badu, and, along with the help of the legendary producer Leon Sylvers III, she recorded this fine album in Santa Monica, California. To her credit, N'Dambi has a hugely distinctive vocal styling, making her instantly recognizable to most Soul Music fans. This set is, probably, her most satisfying release to date. Previous outings did contain killer tracks, however, these recordings show a new maturity and consistency throughout the proceedings, which make for a hugely enjoyable journey, stopping off at various welcome points along the way, one of which is the wonderfully titled 'Nobody Jones', which is as good a song as I have ever heard from this woman. 'LIE' is another cracker, containing a very socially aware lyric. Other moments of high standard arrive in the contrasting shapes of 'Mind Blowin', the Southern sounding 'Daisy Chain', 'Can't Hardly Wait' and the moody and melodic 'What It Takes'. N'Dambi's music is a thoughtful and really does set a mood throughout. 'N'Dambi....Mistress Of The Mood Music'! Very bold! Very fine release.

How is Ledisi following up Lost & Found, the 2007 breakthrough that earned her Grammy nominations for best new artist and best R&B album? "I'm just going for it, all the way," she says, with Turn Me Loose, due Aug. 18.

For Loose, her fourth album, Ledisi teamed with veteran producers and writers such as Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Carvin & Ivan and Chucky Thompson, as well as her previous collaborator Rex Rideout. "The title is a reflection of me finally being free. I'm singing my tail off; everything I do live, I do here. Now you get to take that wild, crazy, fun girl you see on stage home with you."

Ledisi drew particular inspiration from the Buddy Miles song Them Changes, and she plans to put a cover version on Loose as an unlisted bonus track. "I had never heard the song, and then a friend played it for me and I started to cry. I just lost my mind, and I thought, 'I want to be able to let go like that.' "

R&B singer Sade is to release her first album in nine years, according to reports. Sade's US website has been refreshed and a new site, Sade2009.com, has been launched with purported information about the forthcoming record.

The reports have been confirmed by Aruba-based radio station RAAR FM, although Sade's label has yet to comment – or to reassure sceptics that Sade2009.com is an official site. Last heard on 2000's Lovers Rock, Sade is notoriously patient with her music – prompting even Prince to recently say he was "[getting] sick of waiting for Sade to make a new album".

According to the new – and still unauthenticated – artist site, "[Sade] does not make albums for the money, Sade is an artist who creates music purely on inspiration. Hence why we've waited nearly a decade for another release, like a poet with a nine-year year dry spell until she fell in love again, Sade will bless us with another classic. In occasionally incorrect English, the site promises a new album on 25 November, even if its songs will "[reveal] little about [Sade's] closely shielded private life".

Apart from these reports, the most recent word on Sade's recordings is from R&B singer Maxwell, who wrote in March. "Sade is on her way [with a new album] and trust me, it's so monolithic it'll shake you in your shoes!" he posted on his Facebook fan page. Whenever Sade's new album arrives, we hope it's sexier than the word "monolithic" would suggest.

The Soul Of John Black is the nom de musique of John Bigham, whose impressive resume includes a stint as percussionist with the Miles Davis band, eight years of guitar and keyboard work with the pioneering rock-funk-ska band Fishbone, and touring and session work with Dr. Dré, Eminem, Nikka Costa, Bruce Hornsby and Everlast, just to name a few. "I never intended to be a performer," Bigham says. "I loved music and wanted to be a part of it, but by picking up a guitar, coming to California and telling people I was a musician, I put things in motion. Somebody told somebody else I was a musician, then next thing I knew, I was in Paris playing with Miles Davis. When Miles first asked me if I could play percussion, I said yes, even though I'd never played percussion, because I knew how percussion should sound, and I knew I could do it. YahZarah? Most shoppers don’t know the name, the sound, whether YahZarah is a band or solo artist, or how to pronounce that complex-looking name.
When she decided to pursue a musical career full time, Williams became YahZarah as a tribute to her grandmothers, Yah and Sarah. In August 1997, she came to the Bull City to study at North Carolina Central University, where she won a full scholarship to the jazz program. Her talent had won her acceptance letters from the prestigious Juilliard and Carnegie Mellon music programs, but she came to N.C. Central because all eight members of her band got accepted there. Now with established roots in Durham, she’s played regular dates as part of her former band Hidden Image at Talk of the Town and at Durham’s now-defunct The Lounge at Cosmic Cantina.

A classically trained vocalist, YahZarah is also noted for her ability to sing in the whistle register, displayed on tracks such as “Baby” (from the Blackstar album) and a rendition of “My Funny Valentine” on jazz pianist Marcus Johnson’s In Person - Live at Blues Alley LP. YahZarah is featured on the albums Connected and Leave It All Behind by The Foreign Exchange and the Little Brother album The Minstrel Show. Re-introducing herself by the new stage name Purple St. James, she released an eight-song EP, The Prelude, in September 2008.

By the sound of them, you would think Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings started making funk-threaded soul music together in the 1960s. Few devotedly retro acts are as convincing. Few singers as skilled as Sharon Jones at stuffing notes with ache and meaning might be willing to invest in a sound so fully occupied by the likes of Bettye LaVette and Tina Turner in the Ike years, too. But what Jones brings to the funkified table has legs of its own — eight of them, to be exact — and they belong to Binky Griptite, Bugaloo Velez, Homer Steinweiss, and Dave Guy — her Dap-Kings.

Jones, like James Brown, was born in Augusta, GA; there she sang in her church choir, and from fellow parishioners picked up the kind of back-patting she needed to convince her to go mainstream. As a teenager, she moved with her family to Brooklyn, where she immersed herself in 1970s disco and funk with an eye toward cutting a record of her own. Instead, studios came calling and with them steady work — by her twenties, Jones was turning in backup vocals for gospel, soul, disco and blues artists, most of it uncredited. In the ’80s, however, Jones’ sound was deemed unfashionable, and instead of pushing ahead with her soul diva’s dream she went back to church singing. She also took a job as a corrections officer at New York’s Rykers Island.

It wouldn’t be until 1996 that Desco Records would rediscover Jones’ sweat-basted, lived-in talent. With that label’s house band, the Soul Providers, Jones released several singles in the late ’90s; their warmth and genuineness propelled the act across the Atlantic, and Jones picked up a moniker — the queen of funk — that stuck. Jones released her first full-length with the Dap-Kings, Dap Dippin’ with Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, after signing with Daptone Records in 2002. Years of touring behind it, as well as cutting singles with other artists (including Greyboy) ensued. In 2005, Jones reteamed with the Dap-Kings for the winking groovefest that is Naturally. With it, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings proved that, no matter how late in the game, they are hell-bent on breathing life back into boiled-down funk and soul.

Sharon Jones & Dap-Kings - Dap-Dippin'
It’s hard to believe that Sharon Jones’ debut LP is a product of the year 2002, for several reasons. Given the excellent singles she recorded for Desco beginning in the late ’90s, it seems like she would have gotten the opportunity for a full-length sooner; plus, her brand of raw, heavy, hard-driving funk is such a throwback to the ’70s, and she pulls it off so well, that you wonder how she could have escaped that decade without at least a few rare, classic 45s (in the vein of labelmate Lee Fields). It’s not hard to believe she once made her living as a prison guard, based on the tough-as-nails, no-nonsense performances she belts out on Dap Dippin’ With Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, the first full-length release on Desco’s descendant, Dap-Tone. Backed by the Dap-Tone house band (a conglomeration of studio pros with connections reaching back to the Desco orbit), Jones delivers a storming set of tunes that would have sounded perfectly at home on the James Brown’s Original Funky Divas compilation. The style and quality are pretty consistent all the way through, but it’s hard not to single out the nearly unrecognizable cover of Janet Jackson’s “What Have You Done for Me Lately,” which is transformed into a churning blast of funk full of biting guitars (and nary a synth or drum machine in sight). Other highlights include the chunky leadoff track, “Got a Thing on My Mind,” the would-be dance-craze “The Dap Dip,” the slow-burning “Make It Good to Me,” and the trials-and-tribulations tale “Ain’t It Hard.” Plus, label head Gabriel Roth throws in his usual “authentic” trappings — the fake live introduction running down Jones’ “hits,” the intentionally dated copy on the back cover — that make the whole package even more fun. All in all, a terrific debut.

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - Naturally
In a desert of computerized over-produced faux-R&B, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings’ “Naturally” is a cool glass of water for anyone thirsty for Real Soul and Funk Music. On this, their sophomore release on Brooklyn’s own independent Daptone Records, they have succeeded in transcending the boundaries of time to bring us face to face with the naked body of vintage Soul. From the first track, a funk-infused shuffle, the Dap-Kings carve a deep and heavy groove which only gets deeper and heavier as the needle cuts further into the flesh of the album. Through ten solid tracks, ‘Naturally’ explores the many moods and tempos of a group that is quickly earning a reputation as one of the hottest live acts across the nation, stretching their versatility to map out the full panorama of the idiom in which they so effortlessly reside. They are able to bring us back to 1970 not with the usual bell-bottomed conventions and wah-wah clichés employed by so many retro-funk wannabe’s, but by reaching back to the original source of all that good music: sincerity, integrity, melody, and an unwavering loyalty to rhythm.

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - 100 Days, 100 Nights
From the first moans of the melancholic horns on 100 Days’ self-titled opener, it’s clear Jones has shed her pop sensibilities in exchange for the Stax model. She hopelessly boasts, “100 days, 100 nights, to know a man’s heart,” to the painful realization that post-100 days... And though this sentiment was more or less present on her earlier discs, the pain seems more protruding as her voice struggles to scream out “100 days.” Seemingly not all that troubled by it, Jones confidently struts on the sadistically triumphant “Something’s Changed.” She cries, “You don’t even look at me / The way you used to look at me, no” before finally understanding, “You’ve changed, I’ve changed, we’ve changed.” Heartbreak be damned.

Jones simply feels more involved in the music on 100 Days. It feels like she’s actually been wronged. It feels like she’s gotten over it if by nothing else than through song. She bears her soul more fully, as many of the tracks showcase soft-spoken instrumentation (“Humble Me,” “When the Other Foot Drops, Uncle”), leaning almost solely on Jones’ foghorn, heart-wrenching voice.

She still occasionally shows her penchant for pop-balladeering though. Searing through the singably catchy chorus of “Nobody’s Baby” the verses sound strangely more reminiscent of Redding’s “Don’t Mess With Cupid.” And the funk guitars coupled with the call and response of “Tell Me” are immediately infectious, harping back to the Motown aesthetic.

As the album ping pongs between the two divergent sounds so rapidly, it hardly seems fair to label 100 Days as a rawer, more Staxy album. But it’s something about the way she sings, how her voice has more oomph, and how you can hear the painful tinge of heartbreak as she belts out each song. These battling styles is what’s so amazing about Jones though. For someone who many presume is the embodiment of contemporary soul, shouldn’t she be able to blend the two, proving a propensity for both? 100 Days is just that coalescence.

Where were you born and raised?
I was born and raised in Houston Texas

Please describe yourself as a person – who is Dominique?
Dominique is homebody. I am rather shy unless Im on stage. I prefer to hang with family to going out an parting with friends.

Did any of your family members have a musically impact on you when you were growing up?
I wouldnt say they had a musical impact but their work ethics have definately rubbed off on me. My dad is really anal about things. He needs them to always be in order and on schedule. That really helps me on the buisness side and my mom is a fashionista! She keeps my image on point.

What would you say is your best characteristic?
I would have to say my drive. The music business is really challenging at times and having the drive to keep going puts me ahead of the curve.

How was it making "Good Girl Blues"?
Making Good Girl Blues was an amazing experience. I got to work with cool producer by the name of M DUB. It was exciting to be able to write songs that really describe past relationships and friends experiences. Since I am releasing this album independently I had total control so that was fun too.

What is your personal favorite song you’ve written?
On this album it would be a tie between Exclusively and Gerrale (In Love). Exclusively just came out so effortlessly and its a story I have heard a million times from friends. Gerrale (in love) is about my husband so its self explanatory.

Are you pleased with how your career is going?
Yes I am happy to have so many people discover my music before I even released the album. I hope to keep moving forward, tour and bring my sound to the world.

What would be your dream collaboration album (musicians/producers/writers etc)?
Wow. I would love to have Kanye West produce a song for me. He is really innovative. I also would love to collaborate with my idol Tina Turner. She is just amazing!!!

Where are your best places to perform?
My favorite places to perform are any places that are open to my sound. Im really excited to give my fans something relatable and exciting.

Is there anything you’d like to change?
I really have no regrets. Every experience has made me into the artist I am today. I just hope to get better.

Any plans to perform in the Europe?
Wow I hope so. Lets get a buzz going out there and I'll be there.

What was the last thing that made you smile and cry
I recently attended at 70th birthday party for my husbands great aunt. She told me she would live long enough to see me get my grammy. She said she was sure it would happen because she prayed for it. That was really special to me. I'll never forget it.

What was the last CD you purchased and which type of music do you enjoy listening to the most?
I just purchased Billie Holiday's God Bless the Child cd. I love her phrasing and style. Solange's latest cd is in my cd player and ipod heavily right now. I just looove her album.

Born in Germany, raised in Italy, Amana Melome' grew up exposed to music from around the world. Both grandparents were heavy in the international Jazz scene; her grandfather Jimmy Woode started as the youngest musician in Duke Ellington’s band and toured as one of the golden men of Jazz until his recent passing. “ My grandmother was a jazz vocalist and I remember loving listening to her sing while ironing. By the time I was a teenager I knew so many old jazz songs it surprised even her… I enjoyed them so much, they just stuck” she says.

" I've been fortunate enough to see much of the world, and can't wait to see the rest. The languages came into play because I love to communicate and possibly have an exchange with everyone I encounter" she says humbly, carrying 4 languages plus in her pocket (English, Italian, French and German ). Amana moved back to the States to go to college and made the village in New York City her home for some years as she earned her BA degree at NYU.

"I grew up listening to (and being inspired by) everything under the sun…thanks to my mother; everything from Carmen McRae to Angelique Kidjo, from Manu Chao to Vivaldi, from Bob Marley to Lauren Hill, from Zap Mama to Alliance Ethnique, Eminem to Jack Johnson...so when I create music, my ear jumps all over the place and I'll find myself combining opera with bossa and jazz, but hey, that's who I am..." Once she completed university, Amana left the east coast to head to Los Angeles, where she joined forces with her producer Saverio ‘Sage’ Principini, with whom she wrote and recorded her debut album ‘Indigo Red’.

Recently Amana was ‘discovered’ also in Europe by the veteran Irma Records indie label, with 22 years of classy releases under their belt world-wide, and it is they who are preparing to release ‘Indigo Red’ throughout Europe and Japan in 2008. Carol Riddick - Moments Like This
Moments has been percolating around in soul circles for most of 2006, getting uniformly strong word-of-mouth, and with good reason. Riddick has a smooth, attractive voice reminiscent of Regina Belle, and her performance on Moments is uniformly stunning. She also proves herself a quality songwriter, with both a consistently strong sense of melody and intelligent lyrical content. There's more than a touch of 70s Philly Soul on Moments Like This, giving the album an instantly classic feel. So mid-tempo cuts like "Confused" and "I Like the Way It Feels" could have been relevant in 1976 but sound great in 2006. Even stronger are the numerous ballads, the best of which are "A Better Me" and the beautiful title cut. Arguably the album's high point, though, is "Brown-Eyed Girl," an bluesy ode to empowerment that benefits from rich production by Fred Kenney. But any of a half dozen other cuts could be noted, as Moments is uniformly strong in material, production and performance.

Like Lynne Fiddmont's Flow earlier this year, Moments Like This evidences that there is a talented new generation of female adult soul singers ready to accept the torch held twenty years ago by Anita Baker and Phyllis Hyman. Fully righteous soul from Baltimore's Yamam'nym. A group who've grown up wonderfully over the years, and emerge here as a mature combo with a hell of a lot to offer! As with previous records, this set's got a really collaborative feel, a sound that builds beautifully from a range of different vocalists, a few guest stars and some well-crafted grooves from the group, all in a blend of jazzy soul with plenty of classic touches, yet always delivered with a contemporary underground twist! The focus here is really wonderful and shows that the group have really used the time since their last album wonderfully, digging even deeper into their own soulful bag to come up with new ideas and richer concepts to keep an album like this totally fresh.

Anthony Hamilton (born January 28, 1971) in Charlotte, North Carolina) is an American R&B, soul, and neo soul singer, songwriter, and record producer who rose to fame with his platinum-selling second studio album Comin' from Where I'm From (2003), which featured the singles "Comin' from Where I'm From" and "Charlene". Hamilton first discovered his talent while singing in his church's choir at age ten. In 1993, he left Charlotte and headed to New York City, where he signed with Andre Harrell's Uptown Records. He was first introduced to mainstream audiences with his singing of the chorus on Nappy Roots' 2002 "Po' Folks", which earned a Grammy Award nomination for "Best Rap/Sung Collaboration" in 2003. He is also featured on Jadakiss' 2004 hit "Why" (which was also nominated for "Best Rap/Sung Collaboration", in 2005) and two of 2Pac's remixed songs, 2002's "Thugz Mansion" (7 Remix) and 2006's "Dear Mama" (Frank Nitty Remix). Hamilton's first compilation album, Soulife, is composed of songs recorded during the early part of Hamilton's career and was released in June 2005. Ain't Nobody Worryin', his gold-selling third studio album, was released on December 13, 2005.
Hamilton is featured on a track from The RH Factor's 2003 album Hard Groove called "Kwah/Home". He also makes a guest appearance on blues singer-guitarist Buddy Guy's 2005 album Bring 'Em In, contributing vocals to a cover of Bob Dylan's 1969 "Lay Lady Lay", which also features Robert Randolph. At the 2006 BET Awards, Hamilton won the BET J "Cool Like That" Award. Hamilton makes a cameo in the film, American Gangster as a soul singer, to which he also contributes music to the film's soundtrack. During the 2008 BET Awards, Hamilton covered/performed Al Green's "Tired of Being Alone" during a tribute to Green's career.

Anthony Hamilton - XTC (1996)
A wonderfully talented artist who is blessed with a voice that is reminiscent of the '70s soul scene, Anthony Hamilton arrived in 1996 with an absolutely stunning debut set, XTC. The album is so consistent that there is not a single album-filler, with every track being as good as the previous. Anthony Hamilton's voice glides over each track beautifully, in a style comparable to Stevie Wonder and Teddy Pendergrass. The album demonstrates a superb fusion of '70s soul and '90s R&B. Crackling breaks, wonderfully clean backing vocals, and infectious choruses supply Hamilton with the perfect backdrop on which to display his unique vocal ability. The standout tracks would have to be "You're My Type of Woman," the duet with partner Terri Robinson, "I Will Go," and the lead single, "Nobody Else." Anthony Hamilton - Comin' From Where I'm From (2003)
After two albums recorded in the mid-'90s went unreleased and 1999's XTC was largely overlooked, former D'Angelo backup singer Anthony Hamilton's fourth bid for solo success, Comin' From Where I'm From feels more like a hard-won debut. Featuring savvy R&B production from the likes of Cedric Solomon and James Poyser of the Soulquarians, Comin' is a solid mix of organic period keyboards, guitars, and horns and cutting-edge "beats" and synthesizers. While some traditionalists may balk at the hip-hop-friendly sounds, it serves Hamilton well. Not only does it position him squarely at the forefront of the neo-soul movement, but it also allows him the aesthetic freedom to comment on a wide breadth of social and personal issues that harken back to the glory days of '70s soul without ever feeling dated. Listen to how the choir screams against Hamilton's throaty plea on "I'm a Mess," and it's hard not to think of early-'80s Prince, another artist who balanced a classic soul style with forward-thinking production. However, it is Hamilton's soft, earthy vocal style reminiscent of Bill Withers and gritty, personal lyrics evoking his youth growing up in Charlotte, NC that really carry the album. Like a more feminine-sounding D'Angelo with an eye for personal detail that would make Terry Callier envious, Hamilton's deft combination of world-weary fighter and sensitive poet plays out with both hardcore realism as on "Mama Knew Love," where he sings, "Mama knew love like the back streets/Used to wipe pee just to make the ends meet," and then urban humor on "Cornbread, Fish & Collard Greens," in which he wryly proclaims, "If you want it (I can rock your world)/If you want it (I put the juice in Jheri Curl)." Anthony Hamilton - Soulife (2005)
Once 2004's Comin' From Where I'm From began to gather steam, it became common knowledge that Anthony Hamilton was no newcomer. New fans discovered that Hamilton had two other albums in his past. First, there was XTC, an album that was supposed to come out around 1995 but didn't see the light of day due the Uptown label's untimely death; MCA rescued it, released it, and were content with letting it slide into oblivion. Good luck finding a copy. Later on, Hamilton became affiliated with the family-like Soulife label, which disintegrated before he was able to release yet another album. Talk about rotten luck. The appropriately titled Soulife, released by Atlantic/Rhino in 2005, presents ten (and perhaps all) of the songs that were due for release on the album for Soulife, in addition two previously released songs, including "Love and War," from the Baby Boy soundtrack. According to the liners and credits, the material was originally laid down between 1999 and 2001, but several songs were re-recorded and tweaked, likely to make them sound a little more like 2005. As evidenced on Comin' From Where I'm From, Hamilton's voice is best suited for spare arrangements with dusty beats, sensitively played keyboards, and distant wah-wah guitars. Soulife is comparatively slick, which might throw some of Hamilton's newer fans, but there's still plenty of down-home grit to keep ears glued to the speakers, in addition to the main attraction -- the earthy, listen-to-it-all-day voice. While not as wonderful as Comin' From Where I'm From, "Georgie Parker" alone makes the album a must for anyone won over by "Charlene." The song will break your heart and sink into your subconscious with one play, even if you aren't paying any attention to the compelling lyrics. After the first listen -- one of those "Everyone I know must hear this right now" moments -- you'll feel like you've pulled up a golden truffle. © Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

Anthony Hamilton - Ain`t Nobody Worryin` (2005)
After enduring ten years of busted label deals and other forms of neglect, Anthony Hamilton finally caught a break. Though 2003's Comin' from Where I'm From only threatened to crack the Top 30, it became a steady seller on the back of the slow and lean "Charlene" -- a risky pick for a single since it sounded nothing like "Yeah!," "Lean Back," or any of the ballads that were getting rotation on R&B stations at the time -- and eventually went platinum. A disc of previously unreleased recordings, Soulife, debuted near the Top Ten in mid-2005 and made it clear that Hamilton had become a major artist with a hungry following to prove it. Ain't Nobody Worryin' will enhance his rep. Had "Charlene" flopped, the album might've come out a little different -- perhaps a little more pop, with a couple guest MCs and some bouncier beats -- but it's even more organic and individualistic than its predecessor. It's also more poignant. Despite what it looks like, the sentiment in the album's title and song of the same name is a world apart from Bobby McFerrin's carefree "Don't Worry, Be Happy": as Hamilton lays it out, people are either too resigned to their problems or too caught up in them to worry. This seriousness transfers to "Preacher's Daughter," a criticism of preachers who are too occupied to take care of their own, as well as the opening "Where Did It All Go Wrong," a breakup song that's as stunned (and nearly as stunning) as Bill Withers' "Hope She'll Be Happier." There's also "Never Love Again," the kind of heartbroken ballad that's potent and sweet enough to sadden someone who's in a completely different situation. But all of this only covers one third of a well-rounded album that's as generous in its expressions of optimism, faith, and lasting love. With spiritual songs both personal ("Pass Me Over") and universal ("Everybody," simultaneously a convincing reggae jam), Hamilton extends his reach with confidence, and easygoing songs like "Southern Stuff," "Sista Big Bones," "The Truth," and "Change Your World" give the album more depth. Studio do-it-all Mark Batson is a regular presence again, while Dre & Vidal, James Poyser, Raphael Saadiq, Ahmir Thompson, and Kevin Wooten help out in smaller capacities, giving Hamilton more modernized '70s-soul backdrops that ideally complement the singer's ruggedly smooth voice. Anthony Hamilton - Southern Comfort (2007)
Although musically Southern Comfort is consistent with the Anthony Hamilton formula, there are differences between the Hamilton of 2002 and 2007. Hamilton 2002’s instrument is actually more versatile and demonstrates a less hurried and smoother delivery than in his later work. There is a raw purity and soulful sincerity here that is strictly about the music. It’s content, and he’s not about impressing anyone else—yet. We get more of his pain and vulnerability in this period, before the industry gets him.

“Magnolia’s Room” is a love song about regret; as much as it hurts him to beg, he would like his love to come back to her room, where he has it as it was, waiting for them to be as they were. It’s a bittersweet song, with an underlying tenderness that is different for Hamilton. “Why” is a very poignant song, one with lyrics that could be applied to Hamilton and his place in the industry: “Why do they keep judging me / Why won’t they just let me be me?” It reminds me of the soul singers of the ‘70s, with their political statements and underlying social agendas. Southern Comfort includes other songs of social commentary; “Don’t Say What You Won’t Do”, “Trouble” and “Never Give Up” all speak of prejudices and self-examination. © popmatters

Anthony Hamliton - The Point Of It All (2008)
Released almost exactly three years after Ain't Nobody Worryin', The Point of It All has a slightly lighter tone compared to that of its immediate predecessor and Comin' from Where I'm From. But just as Anthony Hamilton has been able to incorporate modern sounds that fit with his Southern soul throwback voice, the contrasting feel of this album comes through its subtleties. Take "Cool," the album's lead single, which parlays the stress of financial strain into a good time without resembling mindless escapism. The album's opener, "The News," is as poignant as Curtis Mayfield's "Pusherman" and Willie Hutch's "Brothers Gonna Work It Out" (the latter even quoted), but it is likewise delivered through swashbuckling blaxploitation-style funk. Vocally, Hamilton has never been as dynamic as he is on this song, switching between his grittily textured baritone and surprisingly effective upper register. As much power is leant to some of the ballads: "Please Stay" is startling in its heartfelt regret; "The Point of It All," sparse and elegant, is like the 3 a.m. version of "Can't Let Go," equally steamy and romantic. There are lulls, such as the drippy adult contemporary of "Her Heart," but they're offset (and then some) by the standouts. At least a third of the album's contents would have to be part of any representative introduction to Hamilton. Kindred the Family Soul is a vocal duo from Philadelphia consisting of husband and wife Fatin Dantzler and Aja Graydon. Both began as solo performers. Dantzler was born in Philadelphia and got his start in the music business writing songs for Pebbles and Bell Biv DeVoe. Graydon, from Washington, D.C., had a solo deal at the age of 15. The two united and began writing songs, but then married and started a family, necessitating the steady income of work outside the music business. After a time as an appliance salesman, however, Dantzler went back to trying to make it on the local scene. He and Graydon began performing at the Black Lily club, where they caught the attention of Jill Scott, who took them to her label, Hidden Beach Recordings. Kindred The Family Soul - Surrender To Love (2003)
Each moment of Surrender to Love is saturated in both accessibility and integrity. Soul music is far from dead if one listens to Kindred and their peers; they make the argument that no matter how gritty, how grim the circumstance, the struggle is not without merit. Give a listen to "We," with its manifesto of home in a slow-tempo poetic groove. Other standouts, even though it's tough to choose, are "What Happens Now," "Contentment" with its Tuck & Patti airiness, the anthemic "Spread the Word" with its Latin percussion-drenched funk that is equal parts Sly Stone, Ray Barretto, and War, the swinging, jazzed out "If I," which could have been sung by Monday Michiru, and the overdriven hip-hopping funk of "Party's Over." (There's a hidden bonus track after cut 18 so don't take it off prematurely.) This is as impressive a debut as one is likely to encounter in 2003. A mindblower.

Kindred have a way of making music that seems effortless and easy, but comparing their work to most of their contemporaries, they're definitely a cut above, a really unique modern soul duo who flow together with a wonderful sound. All the elements here are familiar, but their approach is always one that stands out, compelling, captivating and catchy, yet always without being too commercial (even though radio's given these guys plenty of strong support.) By her own description, Soccorro’s music is characterized as a fusion of soul and rhythm and blues. One only has to listen to Soccorro sing and you feel as if you have no choice but to believe each and every word. A Georgia native, Soccorro’s foray into music seemed predestined even at the early age of four. Born to equally talented parents; her mother was a dancer and her father a rhythm and blues singer, it’s no wonder Soccorro developed a love for the stage. By age 13, she had already help establish a 3 girl singing group, including herself for which she wrote and arranged songs. In college her musical experience continued to escalate and by the time she graduated, Soccorro had performed jazz in New York City, African call-and-response in Spain and sang background for the Phat Cat Players. As if those accomplishments weren’t enough, she’s shared the stage with iconic performers such as Kelly Price, Keith Sweat, K-CI and Jo Jo, S.O.S Band and George Clinton just to name a few. Though she is overtly modest when it comes to speaking about herself, I’m here to tell you that you should check out Soccorro’s musical expressions. I have no doubt that you will leave as a fan. Soccorro - Love's Experience (2007)
Love's Experience is not a perfect album. A couple of songs in the middle of the CD, "Friends" and "Stay Encouraged," don't measure up to the quality on the rest of the album. It's not that they are terrible songs, it's just that they interrupt the flow of the narrative Soccorro has going on the rest of the disc, which tells the story of the hopeful beginning, conflict in the middle and devastating ending of a relationship, as well as the protagonists efforts to pick up the pieces.

Love's Experience works best when Soccorro stays true to the narrative. The disc has a contemporary, radio friendly sound. A song like "Tell Me" has a mellow feel that could make it a fixture on adult radio stations and stations geared toward younger listeners. The standout track, however, is "Whatcha Gon' Be," in which Soccorro expresses frustration that the man with whom she is involved can't seem to decide where he wants the relationship to go. The lyrics give the song an old-school feel even as those programmed drums give "Whatcha Gon' Be" a beat that will go easy on young ears. "Watcha Gon' Be" also has the one element that any modern R&B song must have - a catchy hook. And "Are you my man/Are you my friend/Don't need another one of them/Can you tell me what the deal is/Cuz I ain't feelin' this," ranks right up there with Beyonce's "to the left."

Marsha Ambrosius and Natalie Stewart are the funky divas behind the neo-soul duo Floetry. Ambrosius and Stewart emerged in the mid-'90s as songwriters in demand. They're behind some of the new millennium's biggest hits, too. The pair has written tracks for Michael Jackson, Jill Scott, Glenn Lewis, and Bilal. While they're highly respected behind the scenes, Floetry is their way of moving up front. Ambrosius is the songstress to Stewart's spoken word impresario or "floacist" role. The two met due to their love of basketball. Stewart, who hails from London, was a superstar on her court, while Ambrosius wowed fans in her local English neighborhood. They were competitive, but not rivals, so a friendship was formed. Music was also a passion. Ambrosius relished in her reggae roots while Stewart found herself grooving to funk and soul. While attending Brits Performing Arts School, Ambrosius studied business and finance, but made room for courses in voice, performance technique, and recording. Stewart split her time between acting and directing. Later, Ambrosius and Stewart headed to college.
Ambrosius planned to attend Georgia Tech University on a basketball scholarship, but injury forced her to bow out. Stewart headed for Middlesex University, eventually transferring to North London University. Still, they two kept in touch and raved about music. It wouldn't be until Stewart's girl group, 3 Plus 1, disbanded that Floetry would actually give music a serious shot. In 1997, Ambrosius and Stewart began writing songs and playing shows in and around London. Three years later, they moved to America in search of something bigger. A brief stint in Atlanta didn't pan out, but their time spent in Philadelphia proved golden. Ambrosius and Stewart befriended Julius Erving III, basketball great Julius Erving's son, in mid-2000. Floetry and Erving clicked instantly. Erving signed on as their manager and hooked the ladies up with Jeff Townes, aka DJ Jazzy Jeff, for some recording. That's when the deals started trickling in -- Floetry were official and living out a dream. In 2002, they inked a deal with DreamWorks and touched up their own work for a debut album. Floetic appeared in October 2002, and its follow-up, Flo'Ology, reached the Top Ten upon release three years later.

Floetry - Floetic (2002)
"Floetic", the first release, lets you know just who and what these girls are about with a funky soul beat and a catchy hook, this tune easily constitutes a decent head nodder. The smooth seductive Jazzy feel of "Say Yes" superbly compliments Marsha's sweet harmonizing vocals, definitely a must have for any romantic night in. Other noticeable sexy ballads include "Hey You", "Getting Late" and "Sunshine". On a more upbeat note tracks like, "Fun" and "Mr Messed Up" switch up the vibe effectively on what could have been a monotonous slow soulful album. Floetic attempts to guides us on an emotional roller coaster journey, one that deals with the universal themes surrounding relationships, and self- motivation. Speaking to us on a poetic level, Floetry's essence is all about being that strong independent but sensitive woman. Although Natalie's delivery is at times questionable, hats must go off to her for her impressive narrative, there is however some danger of it becoming a little formulaic. Nevertheless her unquestionable talent and passion for music is clearly evident and makes for a refreshing change. The girls are also talented and respected songwriters, having penned numerous songs for artists including Jill Scott, Bilal, and of course not forgetting Michael Jackson (Butterflies). It really doesnt get much bigger than this!

Floetry - Floacism Live (2003)
After delivering one of 2002's most seductive debuts, the Grammy-nominated ''Floetic,'' Floetry follow up with an intimate live set that enriches their already soul-stirring urban confessionals with emotionally charged improvisations. Indeed, Floacism ''Live'''s truly sublime moments come courtesy of singer Marsha Ambrosius' dazzling vocal exorcisms. This dexterous Brit fearlessly channels opera, jazz, gospel, and the blues, effectively placing herself near the top of the melismatic totem pole.

Floetry - Flo'Ology (2005)
Not keen to embrace the dreaded sophomore slump, Floetry have produced a mind-blowing album that has them stepping up their soul game once again. Joints like the head-nodder "Supastar" (featuring Common) are in the mix to satisfy the movers and the shakers; but this album really leans towards that sultry, after-hours vibe they demonstrated on their debut, Floetic. On "Imagination", powerhouse vocalist Marsha practically purrs all over the alluring slow jam, while "I Want You" blushes with sexual innuendo. When they're not in the seductive mood though, these Brit girlssketch out the trivialities of modern day relationships with plenty of style and class.Carrie Bradshaw, take note this is Sex in the City, London (via Philadelphia) style.

Big Brooklyn Red is an artist unlimited by the conventions of the industry. He can apply his style to any music because his approach is organic, he feeds off of what is happening at the moment. That kind of gift is a two edge sword. On the upside, is that you can hear Big Brooklyn Red's voice on many different and diverse projects. He has recorded house tracks, three of which, "Shine your light on me" and "I've got sunshine," and "Be Mine" are getting serious play and recognition both here and overseas. He has recorded for a long list of NY/Miami/LA artists of many genres including hip-hop, spoken word, alternative rock, jungle/drum and bass as well as doing drops for local DJ mix CDs. There is even a gospel song with Big Brooklyn Red's vocal on it charting across the Bible Belt (although the producers may have to be brought to justice before that recording could be counted as a positive experience.) The downside unfortunately is that most of the powers that be need their artists in a box. Big Brooklyn Red's talent is not one that can be contained. Rather than continue to argue that point with the A&R du jour, this album is the first offering for the masses.

Big Brooklyn Red - Foreword (2002)
Tracks 1 and 8 were written as they were sung. The lead vocal on "Time" is the complete take from his second attempt. "God is Good" was one take, one time with the 'hallelujah' harmonies overdubbed later. "Put Wings On Me" was a track by Aaron Fishbein that Brooklyn freestyled over and then fine tuned for the final take. "The War Inside" was a track originally produced by and for The Elementz of Soul. When EOS got together with BBR for a showcase they used that groove and Brooklyn improvised the melody and lyrics almost exactly as they appear now. "Paradise" is a similar situation except the lyrics and melody were previously freestyled by BBR and Antonia Jenaé over a different track that appears on "Aphrodisia2" a mix CD produced by "The Brass King." "Put It On You" was a track written by Leroy Romans that screamed for a sexy lyric and melody. Like good sex the song took time to be completed. "My Destiny" was recorded under impossible circumstances: no headphones, computer crashing every five minutes and Hassan needing to get on a flight within hours. Brooklyn's lyrics were taken from "Taunya's Song," his previously written Jazz-standard-style tune that has been updated in genre but not in feel. "Sweeter than Springtime" the live cut, is Brooklyn's favorite song on the album. It was written in 1994 about the time in mid-winter when God grants a reprieve from the cold for a few days. In Brooklyn's inimitable style the bridge has never actually been written. Every time he performs it he brings something new. In this recording everything came together. The band is a group of masters who all combine talent and passion in equal portion. Their performance fueled Brooklyn's fiery vocal.

The second born of twelve children to Nigerian émigrés in London, Siji spent much of his early childhood in Lagos and London before coming to the US to further pursue his musical ambitions. His own cultural heritage combined with the political and social movements of the age, exposed young Siji to the insurgent, politicized music of the Afrobeat legends Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Tony Allen as well as the soulful grooves of Marvin Gaye, Al Green, and Otis Redding. His parents, in particular, his father, loved music, but like most children of hardworking immigrants, Siji was urged by them to pursue a career in the professional fields of medicine or law. But the lure of the music was too strong. In the nineties, when London was bursting at the seams with new music and groups like Loose Ends, Soul II Soul, and D-Influence dominated the scene, Siji’s attention was captured and he began to follow his passion for making and recording his own music.

After completing a Masters degree in Engineering Product Design, the self-taught piano, percussion and acoustic bass player released an EP, "Facets" followed by the single "My Lover's Embrace" on his own label IVY Records in 1996. These releases garnered much respect and admiration on the influential London underground music scene, gave Siji credibility as an artist, and eventually led to a lucrative worldwide publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music. His youth and inexperience made him open himself up to all possibilities in his music, but it also lead him to sign a deal that he would find limiting to his creativity. With the publishing deal under his belt, Siji relocated to New York and performed in renowned venues—SOB’s, Bam Café and Joe's Pub. He has worked with a number of producers, but it is his collaboration with Osunlade, who produced music for Musiq Soulchild, Eric Benet, and classic R&B vocalist Patti Labelle, that fostered in Siji a love of production. He has contributed songwriting and production talent to projects for Salif Keita, Cesaria Evora, Vinia Mojica and Wunmi. © Siji

Siji - God-Given (2004)
Mindblowing stuff, the first album from Siji, and an immediate classic that grabbed us right away! Siji's been bumping around on various records for the past few years, lending his vocal talents to a number of great club tracks and singles, but this is his first full album, and it's a heck of a great debut! There's a righteousness to the album that's undeniable, a vocal style that's spacey, warm, and mellow and which puts Siji somewhere in a trajectory of soul that runs from Stevie Wonder to Eric Roberson! The tunes have a bit of an influence from the New York Osunlade scene, no surprise, considering that Osunlade's offered Siji a lot of support over the years, but the songwriting itself is completely fresh, and crackles out with a personal energy that only seems to deepen as the set moves on. Incredible stuff, with a sound all its own!

Siji - Adé Siji (2008)
Brilliant work from Siji, a beautiful album through and through, and even better than his debut! There's a full, righteous sensibility to the record that really grabs us from the start, a sound that goes way beyond what you might expect, given that Siji did most of the music himself with the a rich blend of influences that include 70s soul, African rhythms, and a range of hipper sounds from the current cosmic underground. The beats are never too broken, and the tunes are wonderfully focused, often topped with vocals by Siji that are even better than we remember, sung with a mature soulfulness that almost reminds us of Jon Lucien at points, with a majestic, flowing sort of approach. The whole thing's great, a much thicker record than you might guess from the slimline package, easily one of the deepest sets we've heard in awhile, an album that knows how to groove, but never loses its sense of soul!

With her self-titled debut, Brown makes a successful leap from slightly-below-the-radar local vocal phenom to full-on, ready-for-the world soul chanteuse.

Divine Brown is a culmination of her years as an only child spent near her trusty radio mimicking the sounds of the day; from Chaka Khan and Anita Baker to Tina Turner and Stevie Wonder. Divine Brown - Divine Brown (2005)
It's a pity how few artists who truly deserve it make it big. Unfortunately, many big voiced, big talent names fly under the radar and commercially fail when they are compared to names who don't have the talent, but have the right producers. Divine Brown is one of those unfortunate artists who deserve so much more credit than they actually get. Brown's self titled debut album is a gorgeous display of talent. She's a great vocalist with a magical eight octave-range, who dazzles her audience with a mystical talent that captivates. The music on the album is just amazing. Brown is the epitome of doo wop soul, with a solid fusion of musical genius weaved into soulful beats and magical grooves. Her first single, "Old Skool Love," dazzles the listener with incredible tunes and sizzling vocals and terrific songwriting skills. After that, listeners enjoy a great array of soul samples, such as "U Shook Me," "Twist My Hair," and "Something 'Bout You." There is a small flaw, however. Brown makes this album her own with her great doo wop sound, but after so many tracks, the music starts to feel old-fashioned and repetitive. After several songs, the music is pleasantly different, but forgettable. Brown's voice carries the album at the end. Right at the end, "Warrior" brings it all home in sheer musical beauty that envelops the listener is bliss. The beginning is terrific, the end is strong, and the middle is a mild creative misstep, but Divine Brown is a strong showing from a true talent, who with a stronger team of songwriters and producers, could be immensely successful. This album shows mounds of potential, and Brown deserves to be a household name with her stunning voice. Let's see where this girl goes, hopefully it's up.

This fine debut album from Amsterdam based singer-songwriter Giovanca Ostiana has been a long time coming as the lady who also just happens to be an actress, fashion model and MTV presenter has been too busy! Still, it has been well worth the wait. Around since March in Europe this is a stunning debut of fresh, feel good soulful and jazzy tunes.

Produced by blue-eyed soul boy Benny Sings and released on the strong dutch independent Dox record label the whole album is full of tunes that have huge hit potential if it wasn't for the fact that they ooze class out of every note. On the slow and instantly catchy ballad 'Melancholic You' Giovanca sounds very much like Minnie Ripperton in both voice, phrasing and production and to prove that this is not a fluke the fullness of her voice becomes even more like Ripperton in the following track the delightful 'Pure Bliss'.

The ability to create songs of this quality which also have the knack of being instantly memorable is extremely rare and is enhanced by the new beats and samples of producer Benny Sings. The uptempo tracks are just as good. There is funk in 'You can do it'; latin in 'Free,' RnB in 'Stay Together' and soul in 'Matter of fact'

Yet know matter what the genre it is all linked together by the ability to structure tunes that have a lasting melody that will continue to linger in your head for many days after playing them. There may be contradictions in some of the lyrical content of the songs but there is absolutely no contradictions to be heard in the music. Not much pain here, but a great deal of liberation a really free, open sort of soul music that sounds totally great! Songbyrd Jackson draws on a great range of influences here, some of the hipper, more righteous soul modes of recent years, but delivered with a pointedly fierce groove that's all her own! There's some cool production on the vocals that really sharpen their edge, almost giving them an electric feel at times, yet never in ways that make them sound slick or commercial. And the rhythms are great too quite pronounced at points, even on some of the mellower tunes, but never in broken or nervous sort of styles. We're only just getting familiar with Songbyrd's talents, but they seem to be plenty from this debut album and we'll bet we'll be hearing plenty from her in years to come! © Dusty Groove

Terisa was born in the small town of Monroe, Louisiana, the second of four singing sisters. Her father, Reverend Griffin and her grandmother were excellent singers. She went to college on a vocal grant, where she became fascinated with chamber music and jazz. Terisa began to write her first songs by writing poems in a journal about love and life. It was also in college that Terisa discovered some other music -- R&B and Rock 'N Roll. "I've always loved male artist," Terisa says "...the rawness in their voices as opposed to the pretty female sound. Luther Vandross' voice is like an instrument to me, very sensual. Terisa Griffin - My Naked Soul (2006)
Chicago singer Terisa Griffin approached her sophomore album My Naked Soul like it was a major label recording, even though she's actually independently released it on her on My Naked Soul Productions. It is a beautifully packaged product, and the outer shell is surpassed Griffin's exquisite production, which is lush and organic, hitting all the right spots throughout this adult soul offering. Ntjamrosie's mix of World, Pop, Soul and Jazz can be tagged with various labels. To make it easier she baptized it 'Bulu Soul', which sums all of this up in one phrase. With her roots in Southern Cameroon, Ntjamroise grew up with church music and traditional Cameroonian storytelling.As a young girl she moved to Maastricht, with a small detour she ended up in Rotterdam studying at the World Music Academy of the Rotterdam Conservatoire.Majoring in singing she consumed Bosa Novas, Boleros, Jazz Standards and more styles. It's not strange that all these styles are fused into Ntjamrosie's music. On Atouba (named after her late grandmother Bernadette Atouba) all these influences come together wrapped in a blanket of English, French and Bulu (dialect from Cameroon) lyrics. This all is produced by fellow labelmates & Rotterdammers Nelson & Djosa.

Ntjamrosie wants to touch people with her music, to do that you don't always have to understand the lyrics to be moved by the music. 'A hit records would be nice, but it's not the main goal in life' ; Ntjamrosie said. For instance the ode to her grandmother 'Bia Yon' is sung in traditional Bulu, but the heart felt passion can burst through any language barrier.The music on 'Atouba' is best represented on stage. With her liveband, Ntjamrosie has graced the stage in various venues and festivals; IJazz Festival, Seven Bridges Festival, Black Soil Film Festival, REMF, North Sea Jazz Around Town, Pure Jazz Festival, as well as 2 closing act performances for Erykah Badu in the Paradiso and an opening act for Bilal in the Melkweg.

Ntjamrosie - Atouba (2008)
With ‘Atouba’ Ntjamrosie presents a very special and personal album, all in her own unique style. Producers Nelson & Djosa provide a unique sound and together with Erik Ritfeld, Kofi Anonymous and Franck Biyong they make from ‘Atouba’ a solid and exciting album.

The mixture between African and Western musical influences is clearly noticeable and feels like the perfect
combination. The album is dedicated to Atouba Mvele Bernadatte, Ntjamrosie’s late grandmother.
She’s a constant factor and core throughout the whole album. ‘Atouba’ opens with audio excerpts of the funeral in Ntjamrosie’s native village of Nkeng in Cameroon. Her warm soulful sound kicks in with the sultry ‘Trick You’; ‘Insight’ the third song on the album grasps your attention and sucks you further in to ‘Atouba’.

The album doesn’t start out all to heavy with ‘Ensisim’, the light jazzy track with a dab of ‘bikutsi’, a rhythm that originates from the southern part of Cameroon, Furthermore this is also the first song sang in Bulu, Ntjamrosie’s native language. Of course ‘Patience’ can’t be absent, the first single is also the most danceable track on the album, it gets you ready to dive further into the world of ‘Atouba’. This happens with the heartfelt ‘’Squeeze the Breeze’ and with the identifiable Afrobeat/FutureJazz feel track ‘Ici la’. The Space funk of Nelson & Djosa, officially takes off with ‘We All Fear Inside’, that lands you back in tranquil atmospheres with ‘Ye Wo Yi Ma’ where Ntjamrosie mixes it up verbally with Bulu and French. Kut Te Fas starts out as a fairytale-like song, that makes you feel like you’re in Cameroon and morphs into a tune that makes you want to stomp your feet (the translation of Kut Te Fas).

Erik Ritfeld was responsible for producing ‘Atat’ which results into an unmistakable funk/jazz sound. ‘Soul Life Music’ is a fruitful collaboration with Franck Biyong, the well-known French-African singer and can be marked down as one of the high lights on the album, another vocal collaboration is ‘Chase Your Luck’ with Leandros Narcistos, this is another floor filler in the clubs.

Cooling down can be done to ‘Bia Yon’, which according to the Appletree crew is the gem on the album. This exquisite almost acoustic sounding track has also been part of the single release ‘Patience’ and along with ‘Squeeze the Breeze’ was part of the Mighty 8 Project, which highlighted Ntjamrosie along with seven other as the most promising Dutch female singers/rappers. ‘Bia Yon’ is written for her grandmother and literally means “We Cry”. The dreamy folk-sounding ‘Vouane Ma’ brings Ntjamrosie promising debut-album to an appropriate closure, but not before it gets sounded off by Sotu the Traveler’s remix of ‘Patience’, as a little gift for the listener, a cherry on top of the dessert called ‘Atouba’.

It has been five years since Geoff Barrow took a break from searching for Portishead’s new sound to luxuriate in Stephanie McKay’s old-school variety by co-producing her debut album. There are no big-name collaborators for McKay this time round, but she clearly doesn’t need any. The musical recipe for Tell It Like It Is consists of equal parts late1960s soul and early1970s funk, effortlessly combining the social conscience of the former with the musical freedom of the latter. There is also a smidgen of hip-hop, but only in the sound, not the attitude; when McKay sings a song called Money, it’s about not how much she has, or what she would like to spend it on, but the way it messes with people’s lives. It wasn’t until she was encouraged to sing at a friend’s wedding did she realize that music would be her contribution to the world.
